Reports

14th October 2006

Westbury Park are a brand new girls team that have just started up this season - this was their second match ever. Portishead are a well established and highly competitive boys club, although their girls team is also new this season.

Both Westbury Park and Portishead played a high energy game, and got plenty of players behind the ball and played a blitz defence to good effect. In both matched Rockleaze dominated possession, and at times passed the ball well, but struggled to make clear scoring opportunities.

Highlights included:

* Great debuts from Isabella Naughton and Hannah Hawkes against Westbury Park

* Great debuts from Claudia Harvey and Abigail Crooks against Portishead

* Georgia Scott has a fine debut in goal, keeping a clean sheets during her time in goal in both matches

* Aoife Smith and Georgia Scott both did well as Centre Forward - with some good attacking runs and were both unlucky to score.

* Briony Wills looked a class act as usual

* Ellie Courtier capped a couple of goods run with her opening (and well deserved) goal of the season

* Adie Bailey Douglas scored 2 goals - including her trade mark match of the day special - this time a 20 yard screamer that beat the goalie for pace and went in off the post

11th November 2006

Once again AEK BOCO proved to be tough opposition, and a draw was a fair reflection on what was a hard fought and evenly matched contest.

After a slow start, Rockleaze began to warm up, inspired by Imogen Cotter who had a great debut in midfield – harrying BOCO and never giving them a moment to settle.   Rockleaze took the lead after Adie Bailey-Douglas completed a fine run with a goal, to extend her tally to 7 for the season so far. BOCO came at us with renewed spirit after going behind and pinned us back into our penalty box for large parts of the remainder of the first half, forcing several saves from Ellie Courtiour, who had a fine debut in goal.  Eventually the pressure was bound to tell – and BOCO fired in a well struck equalizer.

The second half began shakily – mainly because I forgot to remind the girls that they change ends at half time.  Once this was sorted out, Rockleaze began to take control, with Georgia Scott, Georgia Hawkes & Imogen Cotter ensuring that BOCO never really looked like scoring again. Ellie began to boss the midfield and Briony must have covered every inch of the pitch, putting in some great tackles before striding forward to release Aoife and Rosanna - who made some good runs – with some killer balls. In the last 5 minutes Rockleaze looked like they might snatch victory – but just failed to find the right finish

13th January 2007

It seems like ages since we have played some football, so it was good to see so many girls and parents make the trip to Yate to watch the matches against St. Nicks. The dreaded lurgy and outside commitments meant we were without 4 of the U8s squad, and 3 of the U7s team.

The girls who turned up played with tremendous spirit and ran their hearts out from start to finish.  In the end our unbeaten run was finally ended, but there a number of positives to take out of the day:

St. Nicks vs. U7/U6s

* This was the first full match that any of these girls had played.

* They matched a more experienced St. Nicks side for large parts of the game.

* An impressive debut from Yvonne in her first appearance for Rockleaze

* Disciplined performance from Louisa and Abigail in defence

* Confident debut in goal from Poppy

* Imogen terrorized the St. Nicks defence with her strong runs.

* Claudia & Jessica really got stuck in and seemed to have moved onto a new level

St. Nicks vs. U8/U7s

* An impressive debut from Elouise in her first appearance for Rockleaze

* A brave first half performance in goal by Rosanna , supplemented by Cruyff turns a go-go in the second

* Solid display in defence from Hannah, until injury forced her to retire

* A great display in defence by Aoife who closed down St. Nicks and time and again put in the final goal saving tackle

* The usual fierce tackling and surging runs from Adie

* Ellie finished one of many fine runs with a powerful shot into the bottom left hand corner

* The girls were ably supported Claudia, Yvonne, & Imogen who kindly volunteered to brave the conditions and stay on to play for the U8s

Yr 2s 0 : ? BOCO

I was keen to select a Y2 side so that:

·         all the Y1 & Y2 girls could get some much needed match experience  (this was the only first or second full game that most of the girls have played),

·         The girls would have a chance to play with their peers, and would not be overshadowed by the Year 3s

BOCO had hoped to bring a full under 7s team, but due a high number of drop outs on their side, they were forced to field one mixed team of U7s and U8s.   Because of the number of Yr3 players in the team, BOCO were simply too strong for the Year 2 girls. Although the score was rather one sided , hopefully the girls will gain from the match experience and there were some highlights including:

Yr 3s 0 : 2 BOCO

For me, the match of the season so far. I thought everyone played their part in producing a thoroughly entertaining game of football. The game was never dirty, but I have not seen such a fiercely competitive girls match – and I thought the girls rose to the challenge magnificently.

The Y3 girls had BOCO under the cosh for large parts of the game. They enjoyed more possession, more corners, more shots; and I really felt they deserved to get something out of the game – but sadly it was not to be.

All credit to BOCO’s goalkeeper for pulling of string of fine saves, and to their forwards for taking their chances so well.

17th February 2007

I believe Longwell Green are unbeaten this season. They have beaten St. Nicks and BOCO and are currently top of the Bristol Girls League - so this was a very tough fixture for us. The girls rose to the challenge and produced another great game of football.  The girls passed the ball nicely, allowing us turn defence into attack, and to control the ball for large parts of the game.

We had large amounts of possession and territory in the first half - but could not turn this into goals. Longwell Green defended well and were always dangerous on the break, but Briony and Adie mopped up whatever was thrown at them. The first half finished goalless. We began the second half well enough, but the first time we failed to clear the ball out of our box Longwell Green strikers pounced and scored with an unstoppable bullet into the top left hand corner.  All credit to the girls, they kept trying to play football and continued to take the game to the Longwell Green.

Longwell Green continued to hit us on the break and would have taken a 2 goal lead - but Grace managed to tip a long range shot round the post for a corner. With 2 minutes left on the clock it looked like once again the girls were not going to get the reward they deserved, when a nice pass released Rosanna in space in the penalty box, for her to coolly slot a shot into the bottom right hand corner to even the scores

I thought all of the girls played their hearts out and should be extremely proud. Highlights included

- Aoife and Briony - who covered every blade of grass, got back and tackled, and passed the ball forwards so well

- Grace - Fine debut in goal

- Isobel - played as a year 2 in a match with Year 3s and did not look out of her depth.

- Rosanna - Great goal

- Adie, Ellie, Elouise and Georgia - harried, and passed and tackled - and all could have scored on another day

3rd March  2007

Rockleaze Tigers 7:1 Ashley Down

The tigers came out with a roar. They scored in the first minute and nearly always looked in the control. Highlights included:

Rockleaze Lions 3:1 Ashley Down

Ashley Down regrouped after the first match – and came out much more determined in the second game.

10th March  2007

The Lions and Tigers picked up from where they left off last week and controlled both games against Westbury Park.  All the girls played at least 3/4s of the match, and should be proud of the effort that they put in.

Rockleaze Tigers 3:0 Westbury Park

Highlights included

Isobelle opened the scoring with a great bit of poaching to rifle the ball into the top corner from a tight angle. Ellie, was our first line of defence even though she was playing in attack. She harried and hassled the Westbury Park defence, and was rewarded with a goal, when she won the ball on the edge of the penalty area and powered through to score. Aoife rounded off a convincing victory with a powerful run down the left wing, before side footing a curling shot round the goalie into the top right-hand corner of the goal. A goal to vie with Briony from last week as goal of the season.

Congratulations to Emily on a great debut & well played to Georgia, Adie, Poppy & Yvonne

Rockleaze Lions 1:0 Westbury Park

Despite only scoring 1 goal, the Lions dominated their match more than the Tigers did Poor Rosanna did not get a single touch of the ball in goal.  Eloise made up for scoring against us last week by firing a fierce shot between the goal keepers legs.  Imogen, Briony, Charlotte, and Eloise all had further chances, but were not able to take them.  Well played to Louise, Jessica (both year 1's!) & Abigail.

24th March  2007

Adie and Aoife bossed the game by pushing up from defence, ensuring that we played almost the entire game well inside the AEK BOCO half.  Ellie was on fire, powering through the BOCO defence time and time again, and scoring a well deserved hat-trick, and on another day could have has five or six.   Rosanna had very little to do in goal, but on the rare occasions she was called upon, she acquitted herself well.  Georgia, Isobel, Imogen and Eloise played their part, and all had shots on target.

31st March  2007

Many thanks to the Portishead girls, parents and coaches for playing the games in such a sporting spirit. It was end to end stuff in both games, and all 3 teams will have come away thinking they could have scored more goals, but a dry & bumpy pitch made passing, dribbling and shooting difficult.

The Lions showed tremendous spirit after falling behind to a freakish own goal, and changed up a gear. Aoife levelled the scores with a well struck low shot from the edge of the penalty area, and you could see a surge of self belief ripple through the team. When their #4 (who had been breaking up our attacks brilliantly all day long ) went off with an injury with 5 minutes to go, the tide had definitely turned in our favour and Eloise popped up in the penalty box to break Portishead heart by firing in the winner with the practically the last kick of the game.
